Plantago Side Effects

Plantago uses the natural occurring ingredient, Ispaghula, to treat those with constipation, diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome. The use of Plantago may cause a number of side effects depending on the size of the dose and the individual.
  1. Identification

    • Plantago acts as a laxative. Although Plantago has not been officially reviewed by the FDA for safety and effectiveness, it is used to prevent diarrhea, constipation, hemorrhoids, and anal fissures. It is also used to lower both cholesterol and blood sugar. Contact your doctor before regularly using Plantago.

    Common Side Effects

    • There are many users who have complained of no side effects or minor side effects. However, common side effects that have been reported as a result of using Plantago include bloating, gas and feelings of fullness. In rare cases, these common side effects may worsen or occur regularly. In such an event, contact your doctor immediately.

    Severe Side Effects

    • In rare cases the use of Plantago may cause a severe allergic reaction recognized by skin rash, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, dizziness and itching. These side effects are severe and should be dealt with accordingly. Seek immediate medical attention as soon as signs of allergic reaction occur.

    Use

    • Always follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Medicinenet.com reports that users should take Plantago 3 hours before and 3 hours after using other medications. Take each dose of Plantago with an 8 ounce glass of water. It is not recommended to use this medication for longer than 3 days.

    Warning

    • Consult with a full list of possible drug interactions before use. Medicinenet.com reports that Plantago can interfere with the "...absorption of some medications (e.g. vitamins, minerals, digoxin, warfarin, and lithium)." Never take a double dose of Plantago to compensate for a missed dose.
