Side Effects of Dosulepin

Dosulepin, also marketed as dothiepin, is a drug used to treat individuals suffering from depression. As is common with prescription drugs, dosulepin may cause a number of side effects dependent on dose size and the particular individual.

    • Dosulepin is a prescription drug that is classified as an tricyclic antidepressant. It works specifically by affecting certain chemicals in the brain that have become unbalanced. Dosulepin prevents the absorption of serotonin and noradrenaline. In doing so, the drug lightens mood and relieves the symptoms of depression.

    Common Side Effects

    • Using dosulepin may lead to the occurrence of the following side effects: dry mouth, vision changes, mild insomnia, headache, dizziness, general weakness, fatigue, nervousness and unusual sweating. Though less serious than others, contact your doctor immediately if any of these side effects worsen of persist.

    Severe Side Effects

    • Severe side effects resulting from the use of dosulepin may include paranoia, tremors, hypertension, constipation, bone-marrow problems, heart or liver problems, and severe allergic reaction. Severe allergic reaction signaled by swelling of the face or throat as well as severe skin irritation and rash may also occur as a result of use. These side effects are serious and should be reported immediately to your doctor. Do not hesitate to seek emergency medical attention if any of these side effects become increasingly bothersome.

    Use

    • Always use Dosulepin according to your doctor's prescription. Never alter the dose size or duration of use. Dosulepin may be taken with or without food, but should be taken orally with a large (8 oz.) glass of water. Take in conjunction with food if you experience upset stomach. Store at room temperature away from light and moisture.

    • Since Dosulepin may cause dizziness, be sure to take extreme caution when attempting to drive or operate heavy machinery. Avoid using alcohol in order to avoid increasing the severity of certain side effects. Never suddenly stop taking the medication without first consulting your doctor. The use of Dosulepin in conjunction with other drugs that raise serotonin activity may increase the risk for certain side effects.
