The Side Effects of Veramyst

Veramyst, commonly recognized by its generic name fluticasone nasal, is a drug used to prevent inflammation and treat nasal symptoms. As is the case with prescription drugs, Veramyst may cause an array of side effects, based on the individual and the dose size.
  1. Identifying Veramyst

    • Veramyst, a prescription drug frequently used by individuals suffering from seasonal allergies, blocks certain substances in the body that cause inflammation. In doing so, it effectively treats runny nose, sneezing and general congestion. Although generally utilized for allergic symptoms, Veramyst can be used in cases of non-allergic symptoms.

    Common Side Effects

    • Common but less serious side effects associated with Veramyst include headache, sore throat, back pain, cough, mild nosebleed and white patches around the nose, according to Drugs.com. In a placebo controlled medical trial, nose blood occurred in 15 percent of individuals, sore throat in 2 percent and headache in 2 to 4 percent. If one or several of any of these common side effects intensify or persist, seek immediate medical attention. Persistence is often a sign of a more serious situation.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Veramyst may cause the following severe side effects: persistent nosebleed, fever, vision changes, nose and throat pain, body aches, flu symptoms and sores that will not heal. Any severe allergic reaction to the product including severe swelling of the face is a serious side effect that requires immediate medical attention. If any of these side effects occur, discontinue the use of Veramyst and acquire the help of a doctor.

    Using Veramyst

    • Veramyst should be used exactly as directed and prescribed by a doctor. Since Veramyst is used in spray form, the bottle must be primed before use. Shake well and spray away from the face several times to prime the medication. The usual dose of Veramyst is 1 to 2 sprays daily. Although symptoms may improve quickly, do not stop using Veramyst until directed so by your doctor.

    Warning

    • Never take a double dose of the medication to compensate for a missed dose. If symptoms do not clear or worsen within a week, consult your doctor. Avoid contact with eyes and use of the product with individuals younger than 2 years old.
