Side Effects of Nardil

Nardil, generically known as phenelzine, is a drug used to treat the symptoms of depression. As is typically the case with prescription drugs, Nardil may cause a number of side effects that vary in severity based on the dose size and the individual.
  1. Identification

    • Nardil is a prescription drug that belongs to a group of drugs known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI). By increasing certain chemicals in the brain, Nardil treats cases of mild depression in individuals for whom anti-depressants have not worked. Nardil is also often used in individuals suffering from anxiety. Because Nardil blocks MAO activity throughout the body, it can have serious side effects.

    Common Side Effects

    • According to Drugs.com, Nardil may cause the following common, but not too serious side effects: dizziness, drowsiness, insomnia, constipation, impotence, dry mouth and upset stomach. Although these side effects are common and less serious, if one or several persist, seek immediate medical attention. Persistent common side effects may signal a more serious problem.

    Serious Side Effects

    • The use of Nardil may induce the following serious side effects: severe headache, swelling, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, rapid weight gain, unusual thoughts, fainting, nausea, vision problems, sweating, vomiting and worsening depression. Since Nardil inhibits the enzyme MAO, it can cause a diverse range of side effects. Although they often subside in intensity during treatment, any side effects should be reported immediately to a doctor.

    Using Nardil

    • Nardil should be taken exactly as prescribed to you by your doctor. Do not alter the dose size or duration of the medication. Since it can take up to four weeks for Nardil to work effectively, do not discontinue use without consulting a doctor. The typical dose size of Nardil is 15 milligrams three times a day. After a number of weeks of treatment, the dose size may be gradually lowered. Take the tablet with a full glass of water (eight ounces).

    Warning

    • While taking Nardil, a number of foods containing tyramine should be avoided including salami, pepperoni, Lebanon bologna, beer, wine, cheese, sauerkraut, yogurt, fava beans and large amounts of caffeine and chocolate. Since Nardil can impair reactions, take extra caution when driving or operating heavy machinery. Never take two doses of Nardil to compensate for a missed dose.
