Side Effects of Topral

Toprol, commonly misspelled as Topral, is a drug used to treat individuals suffering from chest pain and high blood pressure. The use of Toprol may lead to the onset of a variety of side effects varying in severity and frequency.
  1. Identification

    • Toprol is a prescription drug which is generically found as metoprolol and frequently referred to as Toprol-XL. It belongs to a group of drugs known as beta-blockers. As such, Toprol effectively reduces chest pain and high blood pressure by easing the amount of work the heart is required to do to regulate proper blood flow. Toprol is also effective in regulating a regular heart rhythm.

    Common Side Effects

    • Drugs.com relates that Toprol is generally well-tolerated by users as 94 percent of patients in a study reported either excellent or good toleration of the medication. In long term studies, 27 percent reported at least one mild side effect. Common side effects of use include mild dizziness, diarrhea, constipation, mild insomnia, gas, mild drowsiness, dry mouth, vomiting, general weakness, muscle aches, heartburn, and headache. Though less serious than others, the persistence of any of these side effects may signal a serious problem worthy of medical attention.

    Serious Side Effects

    • In rare cases, users of Toprol may experience a number of severe side effects including hallucinations, cold extremities, chest pain, yellowing of the skin, irregular heartbeat, slow heartbeat, vision problems, swelling of the extremities, shortness of breath, mood changes, fainting, and severe dizziness. Severe skin irritation as a result of an allergic reaction can also occur. Seek immediate medical attention if any of these side effects arise.

    Using Toprol

    • Drugs.com reports that Toprol tablets should be taken with food by mouth after a meal at the same time each day. Always swallow the tablets whole as chewing or breaking the tablets can lead to an incorrect release of the drug and potentially harmful side effects. Never take two doses of Toprol to compensate for a missed dose from the previous day.

    Warning

    • Driving or operating heavy machinery while taking Toprol can be dangerous as side effects may include dizziness, drowsiness, and vision changes. The use of alcohol can severely worsen certain side effects. Never use in children younger than six years old. Do not stop taking Toprol without first consulting your doctor.
