Side Effects of Amoxi

Amoxicillin, often shortened to "Amoxi", is a drug used to fight a variety of bacteria which may arise in the body. Sold under the brand names Amoxil and Trimox, Amoxicillin, can cause a number of side effects dependent on the particular individual.
  1. What is Amoxi?

    • Amoxicillin is a prescription drug that treats bacterial infections and belongs to the group of drugs known as antibiotics. According to Drugs.com, common uses of the drug include as a treatment for "...ear infection, bladder infections, pneumonia, gonorrhea, and E. coli or salmonella infection". In conjunction with other medications, Amoxicillin can also treat stomach ulcers.

    Common Side Effects

    • Common side effects that may occur as a result of using Amoxicillin include vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain, headache, vaginal itching, white patches in the mouth, and swollen or hairy tongue. Though less serious than other side effects, the occurrence and persistence of any from the preceding list may signal a serious condition. Contact your doctor if any side effects worsen or persist.

    Severe Side Effects

    • In rare cases, Amoxicillin may cause users to experience the following serious side effects: yellowing of the skin or eyes, bloody stool, confusion, severe skin blisters or irritation, persistent sore throat, easy bruising or bleeding, confusion, seizures, fever, and dark urine. Individuals may also suffer from a severe allergic reaction signaled by swelling of the face and throat. Do not hesitate to seek immediate medical help if one or several of these side effects occur.

    Using Amoxi

    • Always take Amoxicillin exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Amoxicillin may be taken with or without food, but should be taken with a full glass (8 oz.) of water. If using the tablets of Amoxicillin, be sure not to chew or break them as this can trigger an inappropriate release of the drug. Store at room temperature away from both heat and light.

    Warning

    • If you miss a dose of the medication, do not take a double dose to compensate. Take note of how the drug affects you before driving or operating heavy machinery. Although the infection may seem to have cleared, always take the medication for the full course of treatment to avoid any recurrence of the infection.
