Three Types of Cloning

Cloning generally involves the recreation of cells and DNA. While the creation of cloned humans is a common image that comes to mind when cloning is mentioned, there are actually three types of cloning.
  1. Reproductive Cloning

    • Reproductive cloning involves creating a genetically identical copy of an individual.

    Views on Reproductive Cloning

    • Reproductive cloning has fatalities of 95 percent. Also, children created through reproductive cloning would have to live in the shadow of their donor. Proponents point out that families with infertility problems can have children this way.

    Therapeutic Cloning

    • Therapeutic cloning involves creating embryos from which stem cells can be harvested.

    Therapeutic Cloning Views

    • Opponents state therapeutic cloning destroys embryos. Proponents hope therapeutic cloning can lead to the cure of incurable diseases.

    Recombinant DNA Technology

    • Recombinant DNA technology involves taking a gene and injecting it into DNA to map human genes, analyze genetic diseases and move genes to a new organism.
