    Common Side Effects

    • Common side effects caused by use of Pepto-Bismol include constipation and darkening of the tongue and stool. Some users of Pepto-Bismol have experienced no side effects at all. Though these are the most common side effects, always contact your doctor if one or several persist or worsen. Worsening side effects may signal a more serious problem.

    Serious Side Effects

    • According to Drugs.com, Pepto-Bismal can cause a number of serious side effects including fever, extreme nausea, hearing loss, ringing in the ears, vomiting and severe constipation. Severe allergic reaction to the drug may also occur as a result of use. Do not hesitate to acquire medical attention if any of the above side effects occur.

    Usage

    • Pepto-Bismol can be used with or without food. Be sure to follow the dosage instructions provided on the packaging. The intake of extra fluids is recommended while taking the drug to avoid the onset of any side effects. Never take more than 8 doses in a single day. Store at room temperature away from heat and moisture.

    Warning

    • Drugs.com warns against taking "...tetracyclines within 2 hours before or after taking Pepto-Bismol." Since Pepto-Bismol can be transferred into breast milk, always discuss the hazards of this product with your doctor. Children using Pepto-Bismol may be more susceptible to intense side effects. Never use in children with chicken pox or flu.
