Side Effects of Aminophylline

Aminophylline, sold under the brand names Phyllocontin and Truphylline, is a medication that treats symptoms of several respiratory conditions. Aminophylline users may experience side effects varying in severity based on the dosage and particular individual.

  1. Identification

    • Aminophylline is a prescription drug that treats asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema. According to Drugs.com, the drug specifically "...relaxes muscles in your lungs and chest to allow more air in, decreases the sensitivity of your lungs to allergens and other substances that cause inflammation, and increases the contractions of your diaphragm to draw more air into the lungs." It is classified as an bronchodilator.

    Less Serious Side Effects

    • Aminophylline may cause mild side effects including increased urination, mood change, weight loss, nausea, insomnia, restlessness, headache and dizziness. Though less serious than other side effects, contact your doctor if they persist or become more bothersome.

    Severe Side Effects

    • Serious side effects that users of Aminophylline have experienced, according to Drugs.com, include severe dizziness, confusion, irregular heartbeat, persistent headache, fast breathing, persistent insomnia, seizures, vomiting, tremors, severe nausea and persistent headache. A severe allergic reaction signaled by a swelling of the face or throat may also result due to use of this product. Seek immediate medical help if any of these side effects occur.

    Usage

    • If you take Aminophylline in tablet form, be sure to swallow whole with a full glass (8 oz.) of water. Do not chew or crush the tablet. Always follow directions on your prescription and never change your dose or duration of use. Aminophylline is also available as an injection by your doctor or through a home-kit. If performing injections at home, never use medication that is discolored or cloudy. Always use new needles and syringes and be sure you understand the correct injecting procedure.

    Warning

    • Avoid alcohol and large amounts of caffeine while taking Aminophylline. Be sure to have alternative medication to treat asthma attacks since Aminophylline is not intended for this use. Children and the elderly may be more sensitive to certain side effects. Discuss with your doctor the risks of taking Aminophylline while pregnant.
