Cisapride Side Effects

Cisapride, frequently sold under the brand name Propulsid, is a drug used to treat gastric reflux. As a prescription drug, Cisapride may cause a number of mild to severe side effects dependent on the dosage, individual, and other factors.

    • Cisapride is a prescription drug that treats what is commonly known as heartburn. According to Drugs.com, Cisapride "increases the rate at which your esophagus, stomach, and intestines move during digestion." In doing so, Cisapride causes the stomach to empty more quickly into the intestines. The chance for the regurgitation of acid-causing heartburn is effectively decreased.

    Common Side Effects

    • The use of Cisapride can cause the following less serious side effects: diarrhea, nausea, dizziness, constipation, stomach pain, tremors, unusual weakness, dry mouth, headache, and indigestion. Though less serious than other side effects, contact your doctor if any of these side effects persist or worsen as it may be a sign of a more serious problem.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Drugs.com reports that users of Cisapride may experience a number of rare side effects including blurred vision, severe dizziness, seizures, unusual weight gain, fainting, irregular heartbeat, and swelling of the extremities. Cisapride use may also cause severe allergic reaction in certain individuals. Seek immediate medical attention at the occurrence of any of these side effects.

    Appropriate Use

    • Take Cisapride exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Never alter the dose or duration of your prescription. Each dose should be taken with a full glass(8 oz) of water. Cisapride is generally taken four times per day and at least 15 minutes before a meal. Store it at room temperature away from heat and moisture.

    Warning

    • Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice as the consumption of either can lead to intense side effects. Be sure to use caution when attempting to drive or operate heavy machinery since the medication can cause drowsiness and dizziness. Alcohol consumption while taking Cisapride can cause the increased risk of side effects.
