Filgrastim is a prescription drug typically used with cancer patients receiving chemotherapy or bone marrow transplants. Classified as a hematopoietic agent, Filgrastim stimulates the growth of white bloods cells in order to reduce the chances for infection.
Common Side Effects

The use of Filgrastim may cause the following common side effects: headache, nausea, nosebleed, vomiting, muscle ache and pain, cough, and bone pain. Though common, the continued occurrence of any of the preceding side effects may be a sign of a serious condition. In the event of persistent or worsening side effects, always contact your doctor.

Drugs.com reports that users of Filgrastim may experience a number of severe side effects including diarrhea, dizziness, chest pain, coughing blood, severe swelling and skin irritation at the injection site, irregular heartbeat, stomach pain, unusual sweating, wheezing, sores on the mouth, and unsteady breathing. Severe allergic reaction may also occur as a result of use. Seek immediate medical attention if any of these side effects arise.

Filgrastim is a medication that is administered through injection and the user should be aware of proper technique before attempting to inject. Never shake the medication before use. It is recommended that patients drink extra fluids in order to avoid the occurrence of worsening side effects. Be sure that the medication is not cloudy or discolored before injecting. Never reuse needles or syringes. Typically, one dose is taken daily for two weeks.

Never take a double dose of Filgrastim to make up for a missed dose. According to Drugs.com, pain in the upper left side of the stomach can be a sign of "... an enlarged or ruptured spleen." Do not take this medication 24 hours before or after chemotherapy treatment. If pregnant, discuss the risks with your doctor before using Filgrastim.
