Side Effects of Infliximab

Infliximab, as the drug is generically known, is often sold under the brand name Remicade and is used to treat the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. As is the case with prescription drugs, Infliximab may cause several side effects ranging in seriousness based on the individual and the particular dosage.
  1. Identifying Infliximab

    • Aside from rheumatoid arthritis, Infliximab is also used to treat psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and skin psoriasis. Infliximab acts specifically as an anti-inflammatory and is considered a monoclonal antibody. By blocking certain substances in the body, Infliximab prevents the immune response that causes inflammation.

    Common Side Effects

    • According to Drugs.com, Infliximab may cause the following common side effects: mild rash, mild stomach pain, headache, stuffy nose and sinus pain. Though common and less serious than others, if any of these side effects persist or intensify, seek immediate medical attention. Intensifying or persistent common side effects may signal a more serious problem.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Users of Infliximab have reported the following serious side effects: nausea, severe stomach pain, irregular urination, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, fainting, fever, chills, joint and muscle pain, severe rash, seizures, severe swelling of hands or feet, suicidal thoughts, sudden weight gain, vision changes, pale or yellowing skin, weakness and a general feeling of being unwell. If any of these serious side effects occur, contact your doctor immediately.

    Using Infliximab

    • Infliximab should be used exactly as prescribed by a doctor. Infliximab is a drug that is injected slowly over a period of two hours. Do not attempt injection if you are not specifically clear about the injection protocol. If injecting at home, make sure to mix thoroughly, use clean needles every time and store the medication in a refrigerator.

    Warning

    • Never take a double dose of Infliximab to compensate for a missed dose. Patients should be tested for tuberculosis as there is an increased risk for infection with the use of Infliximab. Avoid contact with individuals suffering from the common cold or flu-like symptoms. In the event of a surgery, tell the surgeon that you are using Infliximab.
