Glucovance Side Effects
Glucovance, generically referred to as Glyburide/Metformin, is a drug used to treat individuals afflicted with diabetes. As is the case with prescription drugs, Glucovance may cause a number of side effects varying in severity based on the dose size and the individual.-
What is Glucovance?
-
Glucovance is prescription drug that is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Glucovance is the combination of two different tablets that help to control the necessary levels of sugar in the body. The medication specifically works by stimulating the pancreas to release insulin and thereby lower blood sugar levels. It is used in lieu of daily insulin shots and, coupled with a strict diet and exercise plan, can be a highly effective medication.
Serious Side Effects
-
According to Drugs.com, Glucovance is capable of producing the following serious side effects: dizziness, chest pain, dark urine, fainting, difficulty breathing, sore throat, fever, chills, tremors, unusual sweating, vision problems, irregular heartbeat, drowsiness, muscle and stomach pain, yellowing of skin, and unusual bruising or bleeding. Severe allergic reactions may also occur, including swelling of the face or throat. The Metformin in the tablets has, in very rare instances, led to a serious and possibly fatal condition known as lactic acidosis. The risk is greater if you have liver problems. In the case of the occurrence of any of the preceding side effects, seek immediate medical attention.
Common Side Effects
-
The use of Glucovance may cause the following common, but less serious side effects: mild stomach pain, indigestion, upset stomach, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Though these side effects are less serious than others, if one or more persist or intensify, contact your doctor immediately, as they may signal a greater problem.
Using Glucovance
-
Use Glucovance exactly as prescribed to you by your doctor. Never alter the dose or duration of the medication. The Glucovance tablets should be taken with meals. The use of the medication alone is not a sufficient treatment for type 2 diabetes. Only in conjunction with diet and exercise is Glucovance fully effective.
Warning
-
Avoid alcohol, as it may intensify side effects and cause extreme dizziness. Never take a double dose of Glucovance to make up for a missed dose. It is essential to keep hydrated while using Glucovance in order to prevent increased risk of side effects. Glucovance should not be taken by children under the age of nine, as the safety of the medication has not yet been tested. Do not use Glucovance if you are over the age of 80.
