Is removal of asbestos corrugated roofing safe?

The removal of asbestos corrugated roofing can be a hazardous process if not undertaken properly. Asbestos is a known carcinogen and exposure to its fibres can cause a range of serious health conditions, including lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis.

Any work involving the removal of asbestos should be carried out by a licensed and experienced asbestos removal contractor who will have the appropriate training, equipment and protective gear to safely undertake the work.

Asbestos roofing can be removed by either dry or wet methods.

- Dry stripping: This method involves carefully removing the asbestos sheets intact, to prevent the release of asbestos fibres into the air. The roofing material is then carefully wrapped in plastic and disposed of at a licensed asbestos waste disposal facility.

- Wet stripping: This method involves spraying the asbestos sheets with water to reduce the release of fibres. The sheets are then carefully removed and placed in water-filled skips. The skips are then sealed and transported to a licensed asbestos waste disposal facility.

The wet method is considered to be safer as it reduces the risk of fibres becoming airborne.

Any work involving the removal of asbestos should be carefully planned and managed, and all necessary precautions should be taken to protect the health and safety of those working on the project, as well as the general public.
