How to Find Out How Close a Nuclear Plant is to Your Home

With all of the natural disasters occurring throughout the world, many people are concerned about local nuclear plants. During disasters, nuclear plants can emit harmful radiation that can cause serious health problems to anyone who breathes in the air. To prepare for any type of disaster involving a nuclear plant, it is important to find out if you are in a danger zone.

      Log onto the CNN Money: How Close is Your Home to a Nuclear Plant website. This interactive map was created after the 9.0 earthquake in Japan in March 2011.

      Type your zip code or address in the box located on the left hand side of the map. You can check any zip code or address easily, which is beneficial when it comes to checking the locations of family and friends.

      Click "Get Results" option to view the map. A dark red line will display the distance between the zip code or address and the nearest nuclear plant. A dark red circle will be located around the 10-square-mile radius of the nearest plant. A lighter red circle will show a 50-square-mile radius of the plant.
