Flagpole Dangers
Typically when one thinks of flagpoles, one doesn't think of danger, but people have been injured and even killed as the result of interactions related to flag poles. Thankfully there are choices you can make to eliminate much of the dangers associated with flagpoles. Knowing the dangers is the first order of business. Knowing what to do do avoid them, is the next.-
Choosing the Right Size Flag
-
Choosing the right size flag for your flagpole is important. When unfurled on a windy day, a flag creates tremendous pull on a flag pole. Much like a mast on a ship, if the pull grows too large, the pole will snap, possibly falling on people, property, power lines or pets. To avoid this problem, be sure to obey all warnings regarding the size of the flag you fly on the pole you choose, as well as any recommendations for maximum wind speeds under which you can safely fly your flag.
The Pulley Can Become a Noose
-
The rope system for hoisting a flag can easily be used to hoist pets or small children as well. Never leave the pulley rope easily accessible to unauthorized users. When not in use, remove the clamps to avoid the opportunity for horseplay on the part of children, teens and young adults who might be stronger than they are wise.
Location, Location, Location
-
Take heed when placing a flag pole that it be well marked or close enough to a well-marked spot so that people driving, biking or walking will notice the flag pole and avoid running into it. In the case of a car versus a flagpole, there are no winners -- except possibly lawyers representing the injured or lost loved one from the crash. The flagpole owner can be held responsible for failure to properly draw attention to the hazard.
That's shocking
-
The biggest danger from flagpoles is lightening. Fiberglass poles alleviate this danger, although in some cases, they are simply not an option. In cases where a metal pole is preferred, don't fly flags in storms, and stay at least 15 feet away from the pole. An arc from a flagpole struck by lightening can kill you just as surely as a direct hit.
