Are Metal Roofs Safe in a Thunder Storm?
Many people believe a metal roof increases the chances of a structure being struck by lightning. Although this isn't true, whether or not it's safe to be under one during a thunderstorm depends on the type of enclosure it's covering.-
Enclosed Buildings
-
According to the National Weather Service, a completely enclosed building that has plumbing and electrical wiring, even if it has a metal roof, is the safest place to be during a thunder storm. If lightning strikes it, the wiring and plumbing system carries the electric current into the ground.
Open Structures
-
Open structures, such as car ports, pavilions, sheds and dugouts aren't considered safe during storms because water can be blown inside and conduct the electrical current along with it. Being inside or under one with a metal ceiling heightens that risk.
Vehicles
-
A car, truck or van that's fully enclosed with a metal roof is better storm shelter than an open shed. However, the windows need to be completely closed to prevent water from drawing electricity inside the vehicle.
