How to Get Rid of Pink Slime in My Pool Filter
When getting rid of pink slime in pool filters, prevention is the best option. Pink slime is an animal that has a strong outer covering that provides it with strong protection, making harder to get rid of than algae. It consumes waste gas. It resists chlorine, bromine, sanitizers and often remains even after treatment. The steps to ridding the pool filter of the slime are the same as the method of preventing it.Things You'll Need
- Scrub brush
- Hose
- Algae killing chemical
- pH test strips

1
Clean the pool thoroughly, including the hidden places where sunlight can't reach using the scrub brush. Remove all the pink slime. Chemically clean the filter with a borate product. Simply rinsing will not remove the slime and contaminants from it.
-
2
Add an algae killer to the pool, then repeat up to three or four times to change the chemical levels.
-
3
Run the filter continuously for a full day until the water contains no more pink slime and halogen or peroxide levels remain constant at a higher level. Let the filter run for 12 hours every day.
-
4
Create and maintain a good balance for pH, alkalinity and calcium hardness. Repeat the above procedure every four to six weeks to ensure you don't get the pink slime again.
-
5
Keep your pool equipment -- including your pool cover and toys -- in the sunlight to oxidize it naturally. Use a borate product to keep algae from growing.
