Mace vs. Pepper Spray
-
Classification
-
Classified as an irritant, Mace is similar to tear gas. Classified as inflammatory agent, pepper spray will immediately incapacitate an attacker.
Eyes, Nose and Mouth
-
Mace causes tearing and burning in the eyes; increased saliva in the mouth; burning, irritation and discharge in the nose; and headaches, dizziness and general discomfort. Pepper spray causes tearing and involuntary closing of the eyes, even on someone wearing glasses or contacts, due to dilation of the eye capillaries. Additionally, pepper spray causes temporary paralysis of the larynx and uncontrollable gasping and coughing.
Skin
-
Mace causes burning and stinging on the surface of the face. Pepper spray causes burning and inflammation of exposed skin.
Respiratory System
-
Mace causes coughing and a tight feeling in the chest. Pepper spray causes immediate inflammation, including swelling of the throat lining, leading to a reduced airway that allows enough oxygen for survival but not physical exertion.
Effect When Under the Influence
-
Mace does not paralyze, instead relying on pain compliance to stop an attack. Pepper spray's inflammatory effects will stop individuals with high pain tolerance or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
