Ways to Keep Your Feet Warm

If you're an avid outdoorsman or someone who spends time outdoors in the winter months, you've probably been faced with the challenge of keeping your feet warm. Cold feet are not only uncomfortable, but can also lead to serious medical conditions such as frostbite. To help keep your feet warm and dry during cold conditions, a few tips may be useful.
  1. Keep Them Dry

    • According to Big Sky Fishing website, wetness is the main reason that feet get cold. If you're venturing out in snow or wading through a muddy area, it's important to have waterproof footwear. Boots made of material such as Gore-Tex will prevent water from penetrating the boot's exterior surface, meaning your feet will stay dry and warm. Gore-Tex contains microscopic pores that allow perspiration to escape, which also promotes dryness.

    Choose Proper Socks

    • While cotton socks may be comfortable, they'll do little to keep your feet warm in cold conditions because they offer little insulation and retain moisture. Instead of cotton, select socks made from wool or fleece. These materials will continue to provide insulation even when your foot becomes wet from perspiration and will actually dry out over time.

    Consider Sock Liners

    • Consider purchasing sock liners when you buy your winter socks. Sock liners will provide an extra layer of insulation and keep your feet dry by transferring water and perspiration from the foot to the sock while the liner itself remains dry.

    Change Your Socks

    • If you only have cotton socks or if you don't have waterproof footwear, bring along several extra pairs of socks and change them frequently. This will keep your feet dry and comfortable, and will help ward off dangerous situations such as the onset of frostbite. When changing your socks, be sure to dry your feet with a towel or rag before putting on a new pair, and massage your feet to warm them up.

    Move Your Feet

    • If you're in a situation where you can't move around much, such as while attending an outdoor sporting event, try to move your feet as much as possible to keep the blood circulating to the area. Perform toe raises by repeatedly standing up on tiptoes and lowering back down on your heels. Wiggling your toes constantly can also increase blood flow.
