What Are the Dangers of Hot Tubs & Drinking?

Hot tubs can be a source of great enjoyment and relaxation, and even may provide some health benefits. But, as with most things in life, hot tubs should be enjoyed with some caution, especially when alcohol is involved.
  1. Dehydration

    • Alcohol dehydrates the body, as does sweating in a hot tub. The combination could dehydrate you to a dangerous and unhealthy level. Dehydration can cause light-headedness, dizziness, nausea, heart palpitations, confusion, weakness and even coma or death.

    Dizziness

    • Drinking alcohol can cause dizziness, which can be aggravated by the high temperatures of a hot tub. Dizziness may cause you to stumble or fall, which is extremely dangerous in or near a hot tub.

    Sleeping or Unconsciousness

    • The depressant effect of alcohol intake in combination with the high temperatures of a hot tub can cause you to fall asleep or pass out. This is extremely dangerous, especially if you are alone, because you can go under water, and if you are unconscious you could drown.

    Body Temperature

    • The heat of a hot tub expands your blood vessels and increases your body temperature, as does drinking alcohol. Combining them can result in unconsciousness or even a stroke or a heart attack.

    Unsafe Behavior

    • Alcohol has a tendency to make a person lose some of his inhibitions and partake in dangerous activities he may not do when sober. In or near a hot tub or even a pool, this can be very dangerous and lead to accidental death. It is best to avoid or closely monitor alcohol intake when enjoying a pool or hot tub.
