How to Survive If You're Lost in the Woods
Getting lost in the woods can be a traumatic, frightening and dangerous experience. Once you realize you are lost, your primary goal should be to get found. You won't be able to survive indefinitely without supplies or tools, but you can take a few simple steps to increase the chances that someone will find you within a few days, and to increase the chances that you will survive until that moment arrives.Instructions

Once you realize you are lost, try to stay where you are. It will be much easier for people to find you. If you are with other people, remain together. Lost humans tend to wander in large circles, so moving aimlessly will only expend energy and make it harder for searchers to find you once they realize you are in trouble.

When you realize that you are lost, don't panic. Try to focus your thoughts and think before you do anything. Observe your surroundings and keep your senses alert. Prepare for the worst.

Keep yourself hydrated. If you have water available, it is better to drink it up than trying to save it. It'll be better for your body in the long run. Search for new, relatively clean water sources in the meantime, but don't wander far to do it. Try to look for a steam that runs downwards. If snow is present, melt it before you drink it. You can also look for places that rainwater gathers.

It's tempting to eat anything that looks edible in the woods if you are lost. However, it's a safe bet not to eat any mushrooms, berries or wild plants. You're much better off being hungry than being poisoned.

Look for shelter. Gather branches and leaves to sleep on. You'll stay warmer this way. If you are with others, you can try to cuddle together to keep each other warm. Keep yourself in the fetal position to stay the warmest.

Conserve your energy. Don''t waste energy yelling for help unless you think you are near a well-traveled trail, and don't waste energy bushwhacking through the woods -- will inevitably travel in pointless circles anyway. Stay where you are and devote your energies to keeping your spirits up, your emotions calm and your water supply assured.

Do make noise, and try to build a fire -- the bigger and smokier the better. This is your best bet in trying to get rescued. It will help rescuers find you much quicker if you can give them signs of your whereabouts.
