Wear the right type of clothes for tree climbing. One of the best ways to stay safe while climbing a tree is to make sure you are wearing the right type of clothing for tree climbing. Avoid wearing loose fitting clothes that can get hung on branches and be sure to wear shoes with good grip to avoid injury to your feet as well as helping you to avoid losing your footing.

2
Pick out a sturdy tree. When deciding on which tree to start climbing, keep in mind your weight and height. Find a tree that looks like it is strong enough to support your weight. If you see a lot of sticks and branches on the ground surrounding the tree, you may want to pick a different tree because that one might be rotting from the inside.

Do some stretching and maybe even some yoga. You need to be very limber, loose and relaxed when climbing a tall tree. Stretch out your muscles before beginning the climb to avoid cramping while climbing. Yoga can help you not only with stretching, but can also help you relax so that you can avoid locking up in fear when you start climbing up high.

Locate a secure foot and hand hold in order to start your climb. Find the lowest branch that is sturdy enough for you to grab on to and pull yourself up the tree, then find secure sturdy footing for your feet as well. Avoid branches that look flimsy and thin as these may snap under your weight.

5
Look up at the branches above you and once again locate sturdy branches to use for hand and foot holds. Be sure to take your time and really examine the branches to make sure they will safely hold you up as you propel yourself up the tree. Continuing climbing like this until you reach the top of the tree.

6
Begin climbing back down the tree. Stay facing the trunk of the tree and try and climb back down the same way you climbed up. Watch for protruding branches that might catch your clothes. These can cause you to lose your balance or tear your clothes and scratch your skin.

7
Take your time as you begin to climb down. Rushing may cause you to misplace your footing and you could slip and fall. Stay close to the trunk and avoid looking too far down ahead of yourself. This could result in vertigo and dizziness.
