Uses for Vertex Concentrate As an Algaecide

Vertex concentrate, marketed under many names including Aqua-Chlor, Blu-Chlor and Klor9 as well as Vertex, is a disinfecting solution consisting primarily of sodium hypochlorite. Used in settings as diverse as meat processing plants, spas, hospitals and fish hatcheries, Vertex kills algae, bacteria, fungi and viruses on surfaces and in water.

  1. Vertex and Hatcheries

    • A potent algaecide, Vertex is used in fish hatcheries and farms not only to destroy algae but also to kill fungi and bacteria in water environments. Although toxic to some kinds of fish, Vertex in low concentrations sanitizes surfaces, keeps equipment clean and clears the water used in breeding and raising fish intended for human consumption.

    Vertex in Pools and Oyster Beds

    • Vertex and its related products are used in lobster and oyster pools to eliminate algae and bacteria, and to disinfect surfaces and equipment used in processing shellfish for commercial purposes. Vertex also cleans lobster traps and equipment, and in higher concentrations can also be used to clear waters of unwanted fish species.

    Vertex in Ornamental Ponds

    • Vertex and related solutions are used to clear algae and bacteria from ornamental ponds and gardens, and to keep filters and pumps clean. In low concentrations, Vertex keeps water clear and aids in maintaining a disease-free environment for koi, goldfish and other fish species not used for food. Vertex can also be used to disinfect "hospital tanks," which hold sick fish kept separate from the main ponds.

    • Vertex and similar products are used extensively in hospital settings, meat and dairy processing facilities and the restaurant industry for disinfecting and sanitizing surfaces and equipment. It can also be used to clean hot tubs, whirlpools and spas, and to destroy bacteria and fungi from a variety of sources on surfaces such as counter tops and tables.
