What Plastic Water Bottles Are Safe to Drink From?

Plastic water bottles, whether reusable or single use, have some advantages over steel or aluminum bottles. Generally, plastic bottles are lighter in weight and more flexible, making them ideal for certain athletics any other activities. They are also safer for children. However, some plastic bottles leach chemicals into water over time or when exposed to harsh temperatures. To avoid health concerns, stick to the kinds of plastic bottles deemed safe.
  1. PET Bottles

    • The Federal Drug Administration has approved disposable plastic water bottles with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as safe for consumption. These bottles are commonly sold in vending machines and at the grocery store. Most disposable plastic water bottles are made from PET. This same chemical is used in a lot of food packaging. It is safe for single use and repeated use, as its toxicological properties have been determined safe even after long-term storage.

    Cleaned, Reused Plastic Bottles

    • Plasticsinfo.org reports on a University of Calgary study that found bacteria in water samples from disposable water bottles refilled by elementary students. However, the study found that students were not cleaning the bottles between use. Plastics are no more likely to facilitate bacteria growth than other kinds of drinking containers, as long as they are properly washed. Clean bottles with hot soapy water and dry thoroughly before reusing. Cleaned and reused bottles do not leach chemicals as long as they are made with PET.

    BPA-Free Reusable Bottles

    • There is some disagreement about the safety of reusable plastic water bottles, such as those made from polycarbonate. Polycarbonates contain bisphenol A (BPA), which is a synthetic hormone that mimics estrogen. Some scientists believe BPA damages the reproductive system when ingested in excessive amounts. In drinking bottles, BPA is released from plastic and can affect water, particularly when the water reaches hotter temperatures. For this reason, BPA-free reusable plastic water bottles are recommended for use.

    Polypropylene Bottles

    • Polypropylene bottles are reusable bottles with thick, insulated plastic. These bottles are sold in a variety of sizes. Polypropylene is a thermoplastic polymer that has been cleared by the FDA for use to package or hold food or beverages. It does not leach chemicals, including BPA, and it can withstand hot and cold temperatures. Extreme sports athletes often use water bottles made of polypropylene because its chemical properties are not affected by changes in temperature.
