DIY Betadine Scrub

A horse's hooves are particularly vulnerable to diseases and bacteria like thrush, because they often stand in mud and manure. A homemade Betadine scrub, often called sugardine combats thrush, abscesses and bruising. The paste draws out the infection, eases inflammation and accelerates healing to help your horse stand on its hooves again without pain. Ask a veterinarian for advice before using sugardine, if you have never treated your horse for a medical condition before.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour about 1 cup of sugar into a clean container.

    • 2

Add povidone-iodine to the container slowly, as you stir the sugar. Continue in this manner, until the sugardine reaches the consistency of peanut butter.

    • 3

Trim any overgrown parts of the horse's hooves, before using the sugardine scrub. This allows the scrub to reach surfaces that require treatment.

    • 4

Wash away dirt and debris from the hooves with plenty of warm water and a mild soap. Pat the hooves dry.

    • 5

Dip a small, stiff brush into the sugardine and apply the scrub to the areas of the hooves that require treatment.

    • 6

Keep the hooves clean and dry while the horse heals. Apply sugardine each day after cleaning the hooves. Stir the scrub well before each use.
