OB Gyn Instruments

Ob/Gyn, the common abbreviation to obstetrics and gynecology, is a surgical-medical specialty that deals with the female reproductive organs, both in pregnant and non-pregnant states. Ob/Gyn doctors provide clinical care and surgical procedures for issues concerning the female reproductive system. These doctors use a variety of instruments for diagnostics, laboratory tests and surgical procedures, including extensive lines of surgical tools and medical equipment.
  1. Ultrasound Machine

    • An ultrasound machine is a widely used Ob/Gyn instrument meant for ultrasound scanning. While it is more popularly used for seeing a child inside the womb, it is also used to check a non-pregnant woman's cervix and other parts of the female reproductive system for any problem that require medical attention. The ultrasound machine helps detect, diagnose or make follow-up checks of any fertility or reproductive issues, such as the presence of a cervical cyst, cases of internal bleeding and other abnormalities.

    Speculum

    • A speculum, also often referred to as a diopter or dioptra, is an instrument inserted into a body cavity. In Ob/Gyn use, a weighted speculum is specifically used. It is a basic tool placed into the vagina to dilate it during examination. It is also used when examining the cervix. The speculum can be used for direct vision checks or during vaginal surgery. Unlike older speculums that were typically made of metal and sterilized after use, most modern speculums are now plastic and made for single use.

    Forceps

    • Obstetric forceps resemble tongs, which can serve a variety of purposes in Ob/Gyn surgical operations. This instrument can be used for grabbing, maneuvering or removing something from the body. In Ob/Gyn procedures, it is primarily used to assist a baby's delivery by grasping fetal head. The handles of the forceps are connected to shanks that are available in varying lengths. Longer forceps are used to rotate the baby's head prior to delivery.

    Ventouse

    • A ventouse is a vacuum device used to assist a baby's delivery, especially when labor has not progressed adequately. This is used as an alternative to doing a caesarean section delivery or using forceps during regular delivery. However, it is not used if the baby is in the breech position or for premature births. The ventouse works as a suction cup and is placed onto the baby's head when it is in the birth canal. The suction cup is removed once the head of the baby is out, which significantly aids the mother in delivery.
