How to Get Rid of Coliform in Water

Coliform bacteria are organisms that are present in the environment and in the feces of most mammals. This bacteria may not cause illness itself, but it is an indicator of more lethal pathogens, such as E. coli, that may be present in drinking water. If coliforms are detected, the source of contamination must be located and fixed to prevent bacterial infections. Coliforms can be removed from water at home in a relatively simple manner.

Fill the large saucepan with the coliform-contaminated water you wish to sterilize, and place the pan full of water on the burner.

    • 3

Allow the water to reach a rolling boil, and allow the water to boil for one full minute. Heat treatment should kill any coliform bacteria present.
