How to Learn Venipuncture

The art of venipuncture is the process of obtaining blood samples or administering medication intravenously, usually via a syringe and needle. Many current medical-career fields require practitioners to be skilled in venipuncture including doctors, paramedics, nurses and phlebotomists, who specialize in venipuncture. Learning how to administer venipuncture requires some medical training, even if you just want to give shots to yourself or loved ones in a home setting.

  Study to become a phlebotomy technician. Seek training for certification at a vocational school, community college or nursing school. Phlebotomy technicians are employed in the laboratories of hospitals, clinics and other medical centers and work primarily with patients requiring venipuncture services.

Become certified by attending training at a vocational school, nursing college or non-profit medical association like the National Phlebotomy Association (NPA), that offers both classroom and online instruction and certification in venipuncture.

  Learn independently if you need to give shots or draw blood at home or in informal settings. Study venipuncture online, from a book, DVD or other multimedia. Take the NPA's online exam to ensure you are prepared with adequate knowledge to perform venipuncture procedures.
