Trash Receptacles for Parks

Trash receptacles are strategically placed around parks to reduce littering and maintain the cleanliness of the area. Numerous different types of trash receptacles are used with specializations for specific park types. The trash receptacles must have the ability to hold large amounts of trash while preventing animals from interfering with the garbage.
  1. Bear-Proof Trash Cans

    • Bear-proof trash cans are common and required by law in some areas. The cans are concealed within a larger container that bears cannot access. The container typically has an enclosed handle that humans may easily use but the enclosure is too small for bears to access. Bear-proof trash cans are designed for different amounts of waste with standard park receptacles holding nearly as much trash as a traditional round can. Bear-proof cans are costly because of the advanced design and extra materials used in the construction process.

    Round Metal Cans

    • Round metal cans are the standard trash receptacle in parks. The round cans are durable and come with two handles for carrying and a metal lid. The lid is often chained to the can to prevent loss, and the can may be bolted to a post to prevent theft and destruction. The cans require the use of trash bags for easy disposal and they are easily maintained by painting the exterior, hosing the interior and using pliers and a hammer to reset any bent metal.

    Caged Cans

    • Caged cans are an advancement on the original metal can with added versatility. The cage is weighted to prevent theft, and the trash can is placed inside the cage. Trash bags may also be placed directly inside the cage without the addition of the can. The top of the cage is available with different diameter openings to restrict park attendees from dumping large quantities of trash at one time. The diameter of the opening may also be adjusted to create receptacles that are specifically designed for recycling.

    Dumpster

    • The Dumpster is a necessity at parks with high trash volumes. Employees empty the garbage from the smaller cans into the Dumpster, and the waste management company empties the Dumpster. The Dumpster stores large amounts of trash, and many have lockable lids to prevent animals from entering. The Dumpster is a cost-effective investment for parks that use vehicles to move trash to an outside location.
