How to Prevent Sweat From Getting on a Tattoo

When you first get a tattoo done, the skin is going to be very sensitive. Even something like sweat can cause pain. More importantly, however, you should not do anything that will disrupt the healing process or prematurely remove the scab that forms, including allowing sweat to get on the tattoo. There are several precautions you can take to prevent sweat and other contaminants from getting on your new tattoo.

Instructions

    • 1

Wait two to three weeks after getting your tattoo to workout. You are much more likely to sweat and contaminate the tattoo during a strenuous workout. Stay away from the gym and other outdoor activities.

    • 2

Stay away from other areas that induce sweating for two to three weeks after getting the tattoo. This includes being outside in hot weather or direct sunlight or places like saunas or sweat lodges or around hot tubs.

    • 3

Take cooler showers. You should not have water beating directly on the tattoo for several weeks, but when you do take a shower or bath, keep the water lukewarm or even cool. When you take a hot shower, you are much more likely to start sweating once you step out of the shower. The sweat that forms on your skin after a hot shower is actually what makes you feel cool as it evaporates.

Pat the tattoo gently with a clean, soft towel if it does get sweat or any moisture at all on it. This will help prevent the sweat and moisture from ruining your tattoo.
