How to Promote Social Responsibility for Health

Social responsibility is a deep and complex area. It crosses many disciplines from religion, to politics and science. There are two main thrusts in social responsibility related to health. One is what governments owe to its citizens, in the areas of access to health care, water, nutrition and sanitation. The other aspect is individual responsibility. The Journal of Medical Ethics identifies that six of the 10 leading factors in the global burden of disease are related to lifestyle. These are: unsafe sex, high blood pressure, consumption of alcohol, consumption of tobacco, high cholesterol and obesity.
