Products to Kill Mold

Molds are small organisms that can be found inside and outside our homes. They play an important role in the environment, as they are needed to decompose dead material. Despite the benefits they provide, some molds release noxious odors and can cause respiratory problems or health complications. While it is not possible to eliminate all mold, there are a few steps you can take to tackle areas with problematic mold growth and prevent it from spreading.
  1. Baking Soda

    • Baking soda is a household product that is safe to use around young children and pets and is quite effective in removing mold, as well as reducing the mold odor. Apply baking soda to the affected area and begin away scrubbing the mold. The baking soda also absorbs any moisture in the area and limits the ability of mold to regenerate. It's important to scrub the area, rinse with water and then reapply the baking soda solution to the spot and leave it to dry.

    White Vinegar

    • Vinegar is a safe solution for killing off mold spores and one that does not leave a residue that can harm children or pets. According to Care 2 Healthy Living, regular vinegar that you purchase in the supermarket is capable of killing 99 percent of bacteria and 82 percent of mold spores, making it a relatively powerful cleanser. Fill up a spray bottle with white vinegar and spray it on any areas that have developed mold. Instead of rinsing, let it sit for a couple of hours. The smell will dissipate; however, the vinegar will continue to kill the mold.

    Tea Tree Oil

    • Tea tree oil is a naturally produced fungicide, germicide and bactericide. It comes from the Melaleuca tree, which is a shrub that has needle-like leaves. It is used in both beauty products and housecleaning products, due to its cleansing and disinfecting properties. It is highly effective at killing and removing mold when sprayed on, and will also remove mold odors. You can find tea tree oil at most health food stores or pharmacies.

    Grapefruit Seed Extract

    • Grapefruit seed extract is an odorless liquid that is relatively inexpensive and has the same mold-killing properties as tea tree oil. You can find grapefruit seed extract at most health food stores. Apply it to moldy areas, using a spray bottle. Grapefruit seed extract is a useful product to use around the house on mold because it is not toxic and will not adversely affect any children or pets who may accidentally come in contact with it.
