How to Dispose of Sharps Containers in Tennessee

Sharps, or used needles and syringes, are medical waste. The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Division of Solid Waste Management, regulates the disposal of sharps and sharps containers with the Solid Waste Processing and Disposal Regulations. Before disposing of your used needles, you must first place them in the proper container; simply throwing the used needles in a trash bag is hazardous. Medical supply companies offer sharps containers, or you can save used household items for this purpose, such as empty coffee cans or laundry detergent bottles.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the needle into a puncture-proof container, such as one made from durable plastic. You may also use a container specifically designated for sharps; ask your local pharmacist for advice on where to find these containers.

    • 2

Secure the container. It should have a tightly fitted lid, such as a screw-on cap. Tighten the cap or lid securely.

    • 3

Affix a biohazard label to the outside of the container. If you do not have a biohazard label, place a piece of white masking tape on the container. Use a black marker to write a label indicating that the container has biohazard waste.

    • 4

Dispose of the sharps container in your local landfill or place it in your trash.
