What are IPM Tech Public Schools?

An IPM tech school is not a school that is attended, but rather an institution that implements the IPM technology. Granted a school that uses the technology does not necessarily have to be a public institution. Colleges, day cares, elementary schools, and even businesses can participate in an IPM program.
  1. What is IPM?

    • IPM stands for integrated pest management. IPM is a method used too prevent insects and other pests from invading areas that may be prone to such infestations. Pests can be carriers of disease so it is best to prevent them before they become a problem. Fecal matter of certain insects and rats are allergens and can cause people to have asthmatic attacks.

    Who Uses IPM?

    • Any institution can use IPM. Schools use IPM over pesticides since IPM is safer around children. Businesses may choose to implement an IPM plan to keep employees safe. Stadiums and fair grounds may opt to use an IPM plan, as well. Restaurants may use one since food is plentiful. Pests can quickly take advantage of the habitat and can thrive, causing many problems. Where there may be large amounts of people, food, and garbage, IPM plans should be used. These methods keep people safe from diseases and help those with allergies have a better quality of life while at these establishments. It is also a preferred method when pesticide use in unwanted.

    How IPM Works

    • IPM is a plan put forth in action to prevent pests from invading. Individual environments are accessed for potential hazards. Keeping floors free of food and other garbage may be as part of one plan, while a dining establishment may keep food in containers and utensils clean. By taking away a mouse's essential daily needs, it is less likely to nest in that particular environment. Filling in holes or gaps of a school building may stop a swarm of wasps from dwelling near children. There is an IPM plan for virtually any scenario and building. Keeping people safe is it's primary goal.

How to Use IPM at Your Institution

    • The building or area will need to be first evaluated thoroughly. Common areas that are found to be conducive to attracting pests are food area, locker rooms, and the landscape, if any. Food must be contained and stored so that nothing is able to get into the food. Mice are able to chew through certain containers, so it is best to get sturdy plastic ones that might hinder their success.

Locker rooms can be damp and dark. Insects are naturally attracted to these areas. Making sure dirty clothes are removed from lockers and the floor helps stop pest from nesting there. Check to see if there are any leaks in the shower areas and around toilets. Cleaning the area with soap may help prevent an infestation.

The landscape of an area is another big factor in harboring pests. Keeping the grounds well manicured and bushes trimmed will make the land less attractive to pests. They like coverage, and removing it will remove them.

Other things that can be done to help prevent an invasion is taking out the trash daily. Prohibit eating in the classrooms and limit it only to the cafeteria. Keeping the food sources secluded will also help seclude pests. Seal any cracks in walls or floors to stop insects from coming in.

Of course, there are many other places that may need extra care and attention, but it all depends on the type of institution and their needs.
