The National Institute on Drug Abuse states that in 2009, 23 percent of youth under 12 had binged on alcohol. Adolescents, adults and even unborn babies can all be affected by substance abuse. with the Institute claiming that approximately 100,000 deaths are caused in America by drinking every year. Make sure that whatever school you apply to is accredited, so that your credit hours can be transferred and your degree will be respected by future employers.

    • A degree in substance-abuse counseling at Ohio Christian University integrates Christian principles into your studies. The program teaches you to identify the needs of abusers and learn to treat them through specialized counseling techniques. Each semester consists of 54 one-hour classes where you will focus on critical thinking and decision making. You will become familiar with methods of abuse prevention and learn appropriate aftercare and guidance techniques. Designed for working adults, you will attend one class per week and textbooks will be mailed to your house.

      Study for a variety of counseling certificates and degrees at the Association of Christian Alcohol and Drug Counselors Institute. Choose from an associate, bachelor's or master's degree. You will complete 59 modules while studying for an associate degree, and 28 essays for a bachelors degree. You will learn how to counsel the elderly, perform addiction intervention, counsel anger management and deal with crisis and trauma victims. The Association also allows you to study for your qualification through a distance-learning program.
