Metal vs. Poly Drums Safety
Metal and poly drums are storage and shipping devices for different applications. They come in a variety of sizes, colors and materials, and with different features, such as bung holes or sealed lids. Although the types of drums may look similar, metal and poly drums are used for different purposes.-
Metal Drums
-
Metal drums are a common feature in industrial environments. They are stamped on the bottom with information about their use. For example, a drum stamped "17C" means the material is heavy-gauge with an open lid and used to store solids. Metal drums should be inspected for corrosion, dents and cracks.
Poly Drums
-
Poly drums are made seamlessly, ensuring a leakless environment for storing liquids. This feature makes them ideal for use with harsh and environmentally hazardous wastes and chemicals. Poly drums may come with screw on-tops, handles, tightening rings and bung holes.
Considerations
-
Metal and Poly drums have different purposes. Although "17E"-stamped metal drums can handle liquids, because metal drums in general are constructed by joining together sheets of metal through seams, they are used more for storing solids and non-hazardous wastes and chemicals.
