Metal vs. Poly Drums Safety
-
Metal Drums
-
Metal drums are a common feature in industrial environments. They are stamped on the bottom with information about their use. For example, a drum stamped "17C" means the material is heavy-gauge with an open lid and used to store solids. Metal drums should be inspected for corrosion, dents and cracks.
Poly Drums
-
Poly drums are made seamlessly, ensuring a leakless environment for storing liquids. This feature makes them ideal for use with harsh and environmentally hazardous wastes and chemicals. Poly drums may come with screw on-tops, handles, tightening rings and bung holes.
Considerations
-
Metal and Poly drums have different purposes. Although "17E"-stamped metal drums can handle liquids, because metal drums in general are constructed by joining together sheets of metal through seams, they are used more for storing solids and non-hazardous wastes and chemicals.
