Restrictions on Fuel Gas Piping

Fuel gas piping systems must be installed in compliance with adequate production practices, satisfactory workmanship and relevant codes. Fuel gas piping restrictions are put into effect to ensure the safety of health, life, property and public welfare.
  1. Pipes and Fittings

    • Installing defective, repaired or used pipe or fittings is restricted. Avoid using pipe or fittings that have inside obstructions. Use directional fittings for bends and do not bend inflexible piping.

    Design

    • Fuel gas pipes are restricted from being located under exit doors. Close openings in the piping system with threaded pipe plugs. Bond fuel gas piping to the steel main frame and do not use for an electrical ground. Join threaded piping sections with couplings and unions. Sufficiently support piping with galvanized metal straps at intervals of four feet or less, unless ample support and security is provided by structural components.

    Plastic Piping

    • Do not install insert or direct burial plastic piping in areas that are subject to temperatures falling below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not install plastic fuel piping within 35 feet of an underground steam building. Only install plastic pipe that has a minimum wall thickness of 2 mm.
