Homemade Contact Lens Saline Solution

Saline contact lens solution is used to store your lenses, to rinse them and to help you insert them into your eyes more easily. To avoid paying for saline solution you may want to make your own at home. Be aware, however, that if the homemade solution's sterility is compromised it could lead to serious complications. Making your own contact lens solution is easy.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 liters of distilled water
  • 2 tsp. of cooking salt
  • Sterile container
  • Clean cooking pot
  • Clean spoon
  • Funnel
  • Mild dish soap

Instructions

      Wash a cooking pot, and its cover, thoroughly with a mild dish soap. Rinse off any leftover soap with clean water. Sterilize a funnel with rubbing alcohol and set it aside to dry.

      Pour 2 liters of distilled water into the pot and bring to a full boil. Remove the water from the heat source and cover the pot as the water cools.

      Pour 2 tsp. of cooking salt into the cool water and mix thoroughly with a clean spoon. Decant the saline solution into a sterile container using the sterilized funnel. Seal the container with an air-tight seal. Label the container to avoid accidental misuse of the solution and store it in a dark, dry place.
