How to Wash Your Hands After Being in a Public Restroom

According to a 1996 study by the American Society for Microbiology, only 67% of participants washed their hands every time they used a public bathroom. Since germs thrive in bathroom environments, it is a good idea to wash your hands every time you use a public facility to reduce your chances of contracting an infectious disease.

  Turn on the faucet so that it dispenses warm water. Add soap from the dispenser and work up a lather.

  Rub the lather over your hands for at least 20 seconds. Be sure to wash all of your hands, including your wrists, under your nails and between your fingers.

  Rinse your hands with warm water.

  Dry your hands with paper towels, if available. Use the paper towel to turn off the faucet and open the door so you don't touch the germs on these areas. Use a hot-air dryer only when towels are not available.
