How to Remove Tannins From Water in Canada

Though tannins in water may taste bad and discolor your white clothes, it is generally agreed that they are not harmful to health. They are usually present in well water, and arise from the decomposition of wood or other organic substances. Homes located close to old growth wood may have the most significant problem. In Canada there are various commercial treatments available, and local health and government resources can be of help.

Most people become aware of tannins in their water due to a brownish color, bad taste or discolored clothing. Though these things could indicate the presence of tannins, they could also indicate the presence of other contaminants such as iron or sulfur. For this reason, the first step should be the analysis of your well or tap water. This is generally available from your local public health laboratory free of charge. If in doubt, call your local health authority for the correct procedure.

If you are living in an urban center, you should make the sanitation department aware of the problem; they may be able to help. If you are in a rural setting and on well water, you will most likely be on your own, though talking to local authorities may elicit some advice or help.

There is disagreement in the industry on the best methods of treatment. Not all are appropriate for tannins and some methods, such as filtration, can slow down the flow rate and pressure of your water. Health Canada recommends chlorination filtration, or ozonation filtration, since filtration alone will not remove tannins, nor will a standard water softener. Since the tannins are dissolved in the water they must first be crystallized out, and then filtered.

Depending on the magnitude of your problem, and the source of your water, different applications may be appropriate. If you live in a single house, a small filtration unit on your drinking water or laundry room may suffice. If you are in a rural setting with a well, you may want to install a larger system on your main water supply. In this case, it is likely that other contaminants will be present in the well water; be guided by your water analysis to find the appropriate treatment.
