The Effects of Transmission Lines

Power transmission lines have many effects on the areas they cross. The social and environmental effects include stray voltage and safety problems, as well as aesthetic, property, wildlife and health concerns.

  1. Property Concerns

    • Many landowners object to transmission lines crossing their property in plain sight, especially in natural and scenic landscapes. The problems may be exacerbated if alterations or disruptions to farmland or wildlife areas are proposed to install the power lines. Such changes can affect water flow, soil quality, wildlife habitat and property values.

    Safety

    • Safety is always a concern when installing lines. Transmission lines do not usually fall under normal circumstances, but may do so if struck by a vehicle or during a storm. Ungrounded metal objects near transmission lines can also cause electrical shock, according to the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin.

    Other Concerns

    • Concerns about electromagnetic fields (EMFs) date back to the 1960s. To date, no reliable scientific evidence linking EMFs generated by transmission lines to cancer or adverse health effects has been established, according to the Potomac-Appalachian Transmission Highline website.
