Tools Used to Stop Water in Lines

Repairing a leaking water line in your house or simply fitting in new pipes can be a daunting task, especially when trying to control the water flow. You do not need to be a professional to do this, but you need the right tools for the job. Here are some tools that are used to stop water in lines.

  1. Stop Valves

    • Stop valves are used to regulate or to shut off the flow of water through a pipe. They stop the flow of water to areas that need repair or fixing, without compromising the house's water supply. They are inserted into the water pipe to assist in controlling water flow.

    Gate Valves

    • Gate valves are used to control or halt the flow of water by inserting them into the pipeline. This valve withstands water with low pressure. It is operated by turning a hand wheel. There are two types; the rising stem and non-rising stem. In the rising stem, the stem moves as the hand wheel is turned, while the non-rising stem does not move with the hand wheel movement.

    Ball Valve

    • This valve derives its name from a ball attached to its stem with a hollow center. The ball stops the flow of the water onto the pipe with its solid face by turning the handle. It is usually rotated in 90 degrees angle to completely shut off or open the water flow.

    Butterfly Valve

    • This valve is known for its spherical disc that rotates in toward the flow of the pipe. The valve operates by regulating the flow of water into a sector of a pipe. It is mostly turned 60 degrees to completely open, although there are now valves that can turn up to 90 degrees. A flat spherical plate is fitted onto the center of the pipe, which opens or closes through the rotation of the valve.

    Water Gate

    • This tool is used to solder a fitting, or a tap into a pipe that needs repair. It holds the water off if the main valve is not able to shut off the water completely. The water gate is inserted through the fitting and the pipe, allowing you to work on the joint without water leaking. It enables you to repair a section of your water line without stopping the whole water line in the house. While adding a valve into the line, a water gate can only work with an open type valve. The water gate should be measured to fit well into the pipe or fitting. This tool is used with horizontal or vertical pipes.

    Water Shut-Off Wrench

    • This tool is used to turn shut off valves from the main supply line that have remained open and are partially stuck. It is used to turn stop valves that have been in an open position for a long time, making them hard to turn, especially in emergency cases. This is applicable with the main meter valve.
