How to Prevent Infection at Home
Viral, bacterial and fungal germs are found on most surfaces, including wood, plastic, stainless steel and paper. They can remain active for several days. They are transmitted into your body by touching them and then touching your face. They can also be transmitted through the air, via a cough or sneeze. One of the best ways to avoid infections in your home is through diligent hand washing. Use the correct techniques for thorough hand washing to help prevent spreading illness to your family.Things You'll Need

1
Wash your hands often throughout the day with warm water and soap. Scrub for at least 20 seconds, scrubbing the backs of the hands, between fingers, wrists and under your nails. Rinse well under running water.
-
2
Cover a cough or sneeze with a tissue and dispose of it immediately. Never use a cloth handherchief. Wash your hands after using a tissue.
-
3
Keep the kitchen clean, paying close attention to the countertops after preparing meat. Use washable or disposable cleaning cloths to clean the kitchen, never use sponges. Wash dishes in the hottest water possible and allow them to air dry.
-
4
Practice food safety. Cook ground beef to 160 degrees Fahrenheit, or until it is not pink in the center.
-
5
Rinse all vegetables before eating. Peel skin off fruit whenever possible, or wash it well. Wash melon skin before slicing it to prevent contaminants from getting inside.
-
6
Clean areas that are touched often with a disinfectant spray. Disinfect door knobs, light switches, toys, handrails, faucet handles, computer keyboards, television and gaming remote controls.
-
7
Clean cuts with soap and water, apply an antiseptic ointment and cover with a bandage. Change the bandage every day as needed.
