How to Prep for a Joint Commission Survey

The Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, or JCAHO, issues accreditation to hospitals and clinics that allow for reimbursement of federal funds. Joint Commission surveyors rank and score a health facility based on its standards of patient care safety practice.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold staff meetings on JCAHO readiness to outline strategies for compliance. Explain what prepping for surveys means for the institution, departments, as well as staff members and patients.

    • 2

Appoint staff workers to conduct mock Joint Commission surveys, which allow for improvements prior to audits. In addition, concentrate compliance efforts on documented problem areas from the previous Joint Commission audit.

    • 3

Distribute satisfaction survey cards to all patients for feedback on quality of medical care, institution cleanliness and overall happiness with doctors and nurses. Review and post the results with faculty and staff at JCAHO readiness meetings.
