Can UV Rays From the Sun Pass Through Glass?

The sun produces ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which humans cannot see or feel. UV radiation causes skin cancer, premature aging, immune system suppression and cataracts. Window glass blocks some types of UV rays, but some UV rays are able to pass through glass.

    • Three types of UV rays exist: UVA, UVB and UVC. Glass blocks UVB rays, which cause sunburns and skin cancer. Glass does not block UVA rays, which primarily cause premature aging. UVC rays are absorbed by the ozone layer and do not reach the earth's surface.

    Misconceptions

    • Some people believe skin damage can only occur on sunny days, but you can be exposed to UV radiation on cloudy days or through windows. In addition, UV rays reflect off water, snow or pavement, which can create high levels of UV radiation.

    Protection

    • Broad-spectrum sunscreen protects your skin from UVA and UVB rays. In addition, protective clothing, sitting in the shade and avoiding tanning beds can protect your skin. Protect your eyes with sunglasses labeled as "UV resistant" or "UV absorption up to 400 nm."
