NIH Security Awareness Training

The National Institute of Health (NIH) trains employees on security and privacy awareness through an online system. That online training is available for public review. The training consists of eight modules.
  1. Information Security

    • This module teaches that, each day, on average, there are 2,500 attempts to break into NIH computers. These attempts come from terrorists, hackers and other countries. The training teaches employees how to avoid accidentally giving out sensitive information through phishing sites and nefarious tactics. NIH employees earn a certification for going through all the modules dealing with information security.

    Remote Computers

    • This module describes how workers should protect their computers when working remotely, including running virus protection and working behind a firewall. A system should also be password-protected.

    Privacy Awareness

    • NIH workers must protect the privacy of the individuals and groups they work with and about which they collect data. This module deals with some of the federal guidelines NIH employees must follow including The Privacy Act and many other federal statutes.
