In order for individuals and/or families to use transitional housing, they must qualify through the government program offering the housing, according to the U.S. Department of Housing. To qualify, candidates may have to be homeless or meet certain income criteria.
Purpose

Transitional housing is used to provide shelter and temporary placement for people who cannot afford their own housing. Transitional housing programs can be used as "step-down" placements when individuals are discharged from hospitals and have no where else to go. They also make appropriate placements for individuals that are participating in substance abuse programs and need a safe place to live while they become sober.
Time Frame

There may be restrictions about the duration of time that individuals/families can remain in transitional housing. Individuals and families often work with caseworkers who help them obtain more permanent residences.

Transitional housing does not necessarily mean "house." Transitional housing can refer to any type of shelter, including apartments, motels, condos, houses, duplexes or warehouses converted into living accommodations.
