How to Remove Fungi From a Water Bottle

Reusable water bottles are a good idea both for the planet and for you. They prevent the disposable bottles from taking up space in landfills and they save you money in the long run. However it is important to clean your bottle properly and regularly, as the moist environment is perfect for harboring bacteria and fungi that can make you sick. It is best to choose a bottle with a wide mouth so it will be easier to clean.

  • Dish detergent
  • Bottle brush
  • Bleach
  • Baking soda

      Fill the bottle halfway with hot water and add a drop of detergent.

      Scrub the inside and outside with the bottle brush. Don't forget to clean the lid as well. Rinse them well. This will remove any solid debris.

      Add 1 tsp. bleach and 1 tsp. baking soda to 1 qt. of hot water. Mix together and fill water bottle with solution. Soak lid in solution as well. Mix more if necessary. Let sit overnight. This will kill any remaining germs and sanitize the bottle.

      Dump out solution and thoroughly rinse bottle and lid with clean water.

      Let dry completely and it's ready to use again.
