U.S. EPA's Radon Mitigation Standards

As of 2010, the Environmental Protection Agency specifies mitigation standards for radon gas in all residential and industrial buildings, based on its recommended action level of 4 picoCuries per liter (pCi/L) in indoor air.

  1. Mitigation Goals

    • The primary goal of radon mitigation is to reduce indoor radon exposure to the maximum extent possible, while following all applicable codes and regulations, minimizing energy usage and noise, and maintaining safe temperature and moisture levels within the building.

    Fan Placement

    • Radon vent fans must be on the exterior of the building, in an unoccupied attic, or in a garage that is not underneath a living space. Exterior fans must be appropriate for outdoor use, and mounted in a way that minimizes vibrations and noise.

    Inspection Requirements

    • All owners of residential or business properties must conduct regular, thorough inspections to ensure compliance with radon mitigation standards. Owners must undertake necessary repairs immediately.

    Monitoring Radon Levels

    • All radon protection systems must include a gauge that warns the owners of any failures in the system. This gauge should be clearly visible and easy to read for tenants and workers in the building.
